FPGA Security Engineering

Security functions, engineered for your FPGA.

Port and integrate security algorithms on custom FPGA and FPGA-SoC platforms for defense, aerospace, industrial and other mission-critical products.

ESL works with your system requirements to plan hardware/software boundaries, integrate the selected functions and validate behavior on the target platform.

Discuss an FPGA security project

From algorithm to target platform

FPGA security work shaped around the system.

Each project starts with the product’s security goals, target device, interfaces and operating constraints. We help assess where programmable logic can support the design and how FPGA functions integrate with the host processor, firmware and wider product lifecycle.

01 / ALGORITHM PORTING

Adapt selected security functions

Port agreed cryptographic or security algorithms to the project’s FPGA development flow, considering functional requirements, resource use, timing and maintainability.

02 / SYSTEM PARTITIONING

Define hardware and software roles

Evaluate which functions belong in programmable logic and which are better handled by the processor or software, including data paths, control interfaces and key-handling boundaries.

03 / PLATFORM INTEGRATION

Connect to the product architecture

Integrate the FPGA logic with the surrounding processor, firmware, interfaces and build process, keeping the implementation aligned with the product’s architecture and operating needs.

01 / DISCOVER

Agree on requirements

Review the target FPGA, intended use, algorithm requirements, throughput and latency goals, interfaces and verification expectations.

02 / ENGINEER

Port and integrate

Develop the agreed hardware/software partition, integrate it into the target platform and track functional and resource requirements.

03 / VALIDATE

Verify on target

Run agreed simulation, test-vector and hardware validation activities, document results and identify product-specific follow-up work.

FPGA security / Engineering considerations

Performance, assurance and lifecycle belong in one plan.

A hardware-accelerated function is only one part of a secure product. The surrounding interfaces, configuration, key lifecycle, validation evidence and maintenance plan also need to be considered for the intended deployment.

01 / REQUIREMENTS

Set measurable targets

Define functional behavior and product-level targets for resource use, performance, power, interfaces and operating conditions before implementation.

02 / VERIFICATION

Validate the implementation

Plan functional tests and target-platform measurements that fit the product’s assurance process, and record results against agreed requirements.

03 / MAINTENANCE

Plan for product changes

Consider FPGA image updates, configuration control, dependency tracking and security review throughout the expected product support lifecycle.

Assurance and deployment note

“Military-grade” is not a blanket certification or security guarantee. Applicable defense standards, export controls, cryptographic approvals, certification and evidence requirements vary by product, jurisdiction and customer. These must be assessed and agreed during project scoping; ESL engineering services alone do not establish certification or regulatory compliance.
